Anti-angiogenic Effect of Linalool

Abstract
Angiogenesis, the formation of new vessels from pre-existing blood vessels, is not only required for various physiological processes but also essential for pathological conditions including solid tumor growth and metastasis. The progression of solid tumors depends on tumor angiogenesis, and their survival relies on the ability to recruit new blood microvessels. This concept is supported by evidence demonstrating that, once solid tumors grow to more than 1¡2 mm3, further growth has to be preceded by neovascularization of the tumor. Therefore, inhibition of angiogenesis is a promising approach for anticancer therapy. A flavoring phytochemical, linalool, has been shown to display various spectrum of biochemical activities, including the inhibition of tumor promotion. Here, we examined the anti-angiogenic effects of linalool as a possible inhibitor of angiogenesis. The present study indicates that linalool possessed the anti-angiogenic activity against human endothelial cell, suggesting that linalool is responsible for the cancer prevention or cancer therapy by inhibiting angiogenesis processes.
